This course focuses on the fundamental principles that inform research-based literacy and reading
instruction. Learners will also explore the literacy needs of English language learners (ELL),
students with learning disabilities, and other struggling readers. Syllabus (pdf)

"This course was rigorous and made me think. I loved it... I had to ask many questions [and the facilitator] was timely and concise. My teaching comrades taking the course have taught me so much. This was an excellent class. I will refer others to take it." - P. Crowley, Anderson District 5, SC
"...excellent course: comprehensive and timely. It thoroughly covered every component of early literacy in the contexts of both current research and political reality. I'm still learning from it via saved files and classmates' posts. Our instructor was exemplary: knowledgeable, well-organized and responsive." - Lee S., Beaufort, SC
"It often seems as educators that we are spending our time in courses that are just fulfilling the requirement of having a course, but I can honestly say [RDLA152] was one of the most beneficial courses I have ever taken." - K. Ambrose, Galivants Ferry, SC
"This has been an intense course and I have learned a lot! There were strategies for reading that were easy to adapt to my Chorus class. I will finish the course next week and would highly recommend all teachers take it so we can support the core teachers in their efforts to get our reading scores up!" - C. Edwards, Darlington County Schools, SC
"I am proud to have been a part of [RDLA152], and will be putting much of what I learned into practice in my high school science classes. Many of our students struggle with literacy, which is what drew me to this course originally. We have ELLs who are no longer in an ESL program, but still lag native speakers. We also have students with special needs that benefit from as many creative ways as I can think of to engage and enthuse them about subject matter. This course has been like collecting Easter Eggs - vital elements that will make my job easier as well as make me a better teacher for the students who need and depend on me. Some courses you endure, others speak to your heart. This was the latter for me. I loved everything about it"- Lynette Smith, Columbia, SC
